Box Score Surprise, Ariz. — The Spirit delivered a dominant performance on Senior Night, earning a decisive 9-1 victory over Nelson (AZ). The win improves OUAZ's overall record to 3-4-1 and 1-2-1 in GSAC play.
OUAZ wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, striking first in the 8th minute with a goal from Dyanna Mora—her first of the season—off an assist from Lexy Rowe. The Spirit added to their lead in the 33rd minute when Desiree Dutra netted her first goal of the year, assisted by Diane Garcia. Just two minutes later, a deflected own goal by Nelson extended the Spirit's lead to 3-0.
The Spirit defense was locked in throughout the first half, shutting down the Warriors and not allowing a single shot attempt.
Nelson broke through early in the second half with a goal from Lori Wells in the 54th minute, assisted by Janessa Lugo. However, the Spirit responded immediately. Just one minute later, senior Wendy Macillas scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Maria Juarez, reigniting the OUAZ attack.
Lexy Rowe continued her strong outing by scoring her second goal of the season in the 66th minute. Julia Bodelasse then took center stage with back-to-back goals in the 77th and 79th minutes, the latter assisted by Xiolahnie Carranza. In the same minute, Rachel Greksa joined the scoring spree with her second goal of the year, assisted by Dutra.
Carranza capped the night with a goal of her own in the closing minutes, unassisted, marking her first of the season and sealing a memorable win for the Spirit.
OUAZ now turns its attention to the road, traveling to face Benedictine Mesa on Thursday, October 2nd, with kickoff set for 5:30 PM (MST). The Spirit will then take on Arizona Christian University in Glendale on Saturday, October 4th, at 9:00 AM (MST).
