HENDERSON, NEV. – The OUAZ men's golf team played a brilliant three rounds in Henderson this week, as they finished tied for first at the RMC Intercollegiate. Even though they did not take the team championship home after dropping the playoff round, Colby Watkins did win the individual championship.
The Spirit had an amazing first day, finishing -1 (575) through the first two rounds. OUAZ had a solid final round as a team, but a big push by University of British Columbia saw the team board tied after 54 holes.
Watkins had excellent first and third rounds, along with a steady second round, to take home the individual title. The senior finished -4 in the opening and closing rounds and finished with 16 birdies.
Gustav Sandstrom finished tied for fourth, also earning a spot on the All-Tournament team. He had an amazing second round, hitting a hole-in-one in his opening tee shot of the round, and finishing Tuesday with a -6 round.
Kolby Shackleford finished tied for 12th, playing great first round (-1) and keeping a consistent spot in the top 15 all tournament long. Shackleford helped the Spirit lead the tournament in Eagles, as he needed just two shots to finish the fourth hole during his second round.
Kaiden Nicholson finished 17th, and was excellent on holes 10-18 all tournament long, as he was -1 combined in all three rounds off those tees. Alex Castelo finished tied for 28th, and had seven birdies over the three rounds.
The Spirit will have a week away from competition, then come back to host its annual Spring event. The first round of the Showdown at Sundance is set for Monday, March 18 in Buckeye, Ariz.
