2022 Men's Soccer Notes -- Week 1

With a No. 10 national ranking, the OUAZ men's soccer team will begin its 2022 season under first-year head coach David Stockton with a pair of games in Arizona. The season starts on Thursday in Mesa against Park Gilbert and then moves to the home opener at Spirit Field on Saturday against Antelope Valley.

OUAZ is coming off the most successful season in program history. The 2021 squad became the first to qualify for the NAIA National Championship and then went and won a pair of games to make it to the final site of the event. They eventually finished with a 13-5-1 overall record.

During GSAC play, the 2021 team finished fourth with a 4-2-1 record. The season saw the Spirit go 8-2-1 at home, 4-1-1 on the road, and 1-2 at a neutral site.

OUAZ was the top offensive team in the GSAC, with 47 goals scored at a pace of 2.47 per game. They also led the conference in shots (297), shots on goal (157), assists (42), and corner kicks (122).

At the defensive end, the Spirit posted a 0.92 goals-against-average with nine shutouts. They held the opposition to only 8.6 shots per contest.

This year's team will return 14 letterwinners from last season, including five starters. Those returners accounted for 60 percent of the team's goals and 64 percent of the assists last season.

Tom Cohen anchors the returning group after leading the team with 11 goals, 13 assists, 35 points, 63 shots, and four game-winning goals. His assists total ranked fifth in the NAIA, and he was tops in the GSAC in assists.

Tinashe Simbo is also back after totaling five goals with five assists in 2021. Jamaine Turner also tallied five goals a season ago.
