Sandman Pitches Spirit to Day Two Split

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The second day of the weekend series saw the OUAZ baseball team pick up a split with No. 14 Hope International at Surprise Stadium. Behind solid pitching, OUAZ took the opener 7-4 before falling in the nightcap 10-2.

The Spirit ends the day at 18-27 overall and seventh in the GSAC with a 9-18 conference record.

GAME 1: OUAZ 7, Hope International 4
Hayden Sandman allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits in seven innings to set the tone for the Spirit. After giving up two runs in the second inning, Sandman held the Royals scoreless until the eighth.

With its opponent not finding much success, the Spirit got things going at the plate. They tied the game at 2-2 with a triple from Nicholas Lustig in the fourth inning and then went ahead on a Ben Lewis 3-run home run in the fifth inning.

In the sixth inning, the Spirit tacked on two more runs with a bases loaded walk from Deon Reese and a sacrifice fly from Casey Downs.

Lewis and Lustig finished with two hits apiece to lead the team's seven-hit day. Lewis also scored a pair of runs for the Spirit.

Gage Johnson worked the final two innings and allowed one run on one hit.

GAME 2: Hope International 10, OUAZ 2

Both Spirit runs came on solo home runs. The first from TD Walker in the fifth inning and the second from Lewis in the sixth. The only other hit in the game for the Spirit came from Lustig.
