Season’s Final Series Begins with Split

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The final weekend of the season for the OUAZ baseball team began with the Spirit splitting the first of two doubleheaders against San Diego Christian College on Friday at Surprise Stadium. The first game of the day saw the teams trade leads before the Hawks picked up a 5-4 win. OUAZ came back to claim the second game 8-2.

The day's results leave the Spirit at 19-29 overall and 10-19 in GSAC play.

GAME 1: San Diego Christian 5, OUAZ 4
OUAZ opened the game with a triple from Adrian Salazar and an RBI single from TD Walker for a 1-0 lead. After San Diego Christian scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead, the Spirit scored three in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead back.

Casey Downs delivered a sacrifice fly to start the scoring in the inning, with Griffin Hagen and Jacob Griffin following with RBI singles. The Hawks responded again with one run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to go in front 5-4.

OUAZ had runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but they could not find the tying run.

Walker, Downs, and Nicholas Lustig each had two hits in the game for the Spirit. Salazar scored a pair of runs.

The late SDCC rally forced Hayden Sandman into a no-decision after allowing just three runs (two earned) on nine hits in six innings. Tanner Fallon (1-2) took the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits in three innings.

GAME 2: OUAZ 8, San Diego Christian 2
Ben Lewis went 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Spirit to a split of the day's games. His 2-run homer in the third gave the Spirit a 3-0 lead and was his sixth home run since March 29 and fourth in the past five games.

Rene Brockman added two hits and three RBIs, including a 2-run single in the fifth that extended the Spirit's lead to 7-2. Hagen and Downs each had two hits and an RBI.

Gage Johnson (2-5) was solid on the mound going six innings and allowing two unearned runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Juan Navarrete worked the final three outs with a double-play and a strikeout.

Despite the split, OUAZ was eliminated from any shot at making the GSAC Tournament as William Jessup swept two games from Menlo to guarantee they finish ahead of the Spirit for the final spot in the tournament.
