Spirit Sweep Hawks to Close Season

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team ended its season on a high with a doubleheader sweep of San Diego Christian on Saturday afternoon at Surprise Stadium. OUAZ won an exciting game one 13-9 before scratching out a 3-2 win in the finale.

OUAZ ends its season at 21-29 overall, and they went 12-19 in the GSAC to finish seventh.

GAME 1: OUAZ 13, San Diego Christian 9
A 2-run double from Jacob Griffin sandwiched between sacrifice flies by Deon Reese, and Adrian Salazar had the Spirit leading 4-0 through five innings. The Hawks scored four runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game and open a scoring bonanza.

OUAZ got RBI hits from TD Walker and Randall Hutson and a bases-loaded walk by Casey Downs to take a 7-4 advantage in the bottom of the sixth. SDCC responded with three in the top of the seventh to tie the game again.

Ben Lewis homered for the fifth time in the past six games in the bottom of the seventh, only to see the Hawks take a 9-8 lead with two runs in the top of the eighth. Salazar tied the game at 9-9 with an RBI double, and then Griffin Hagen delivered the decisive blow with a 3-run double for a 12-9 lead. Reese knocked in the final run with a single.

Griffin and Hutson had three hits apiece to lead the Spirit to its total of 14. Hagen and Walker added two hits each, and Lewis scored four runs.

Tanner Fallon allowed three runs (zero earned) on four hits with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings but had to settle with a no-decision. Nicholas Lustig (2-0) recorded the win after pitching 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

GAME 2: OUAZ 3, San Diego Christian 2
Tied at 1-1 in the fourth, Salazar singled home Garrett Mayers to put the Spirit in front 2-1. SDCC tied the game again in the sixth inning only to see the Spirit get a sacrifice fly from Brian Camacho to bring home the game-winning run.

Salazar and Walker had two hits in their final collegiate games for four of the Spirit's eight total hits in the game.

Anthony Quattrocchi (3-4) delivered a complete game victory with eight strikeouts. He allowed just five hits and two runs (one earned) with no walks. With runners on first and second and one out in the seventh, he forced a double play to end the game.
