Spirit Upset No. 20 Saint Katherine

GLENDALE, Ariz. – In one of the most intense matches in program history, the OUAZ women's tennis team upset No. 20 Saint Katherine on Saturday, 4-3, at the Paseo Tennis Center.

In a match where every point was important, OUAZ (10-7, 6-1 GSAC) came away with the doubles point to start the day. The No. 1 pair of Johanna Sotelo-Mena & Paulette Careaga clinched the point with a 7-5 win after the two teams had split wins on courts two and three.

Sotelo-Mena gave the Spirit a 2-0 lead by winning her No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-4. Saint Katherine (6-2, 6-1) pulled the match even at 2-2 with wins in the No. 3 and No. 5 singles bouts.

After Veronica Gallardo rallied to win the No. 6 singles 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, the Spirit was a point from clinching. However, the Firebirds again evened the match with a win on court four.

That left the thrilling match on court one to determine the winner, and the dual between OUAZ's Giulia Leali and USK's Laura Fernanda didn't disappoint. Nearly three hours after it began, Leali emerged victorious with a 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (4) decision to win the match for the Spirit.

With the win, OUAZ moved into a tie atop the GSAC standings, and the Spirit can clinch the regular season crown with a win over Arizona Christian on Tuesday.
