OUAZ and Master's Split Again

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The weekend series between OUAZ and The Master's concluded on Saturday, with the teams splitting a doubleheader again. OUAZ would take the first game 10-5, with The Master's taking the nightcap 12-4.

The day ends with the Spirit 17-23 overall and 8-15 in the GSAC. That leaves the team in seventh, with two conference weekends remaining to get into the top six to qualify for the GSAC Tournament.

GAME 1: OUAZ 10, The Master's 5
Ben Lewis went 3 for 5 with a double, grand slam, and five RBIs to lead the Spirit to a win to start the day. The season's second grand slam by a Spirit player capped a five-run third inning that gave OUAZ an 8-2 lead.

The Spirit would post 11 hits as a team, with Jacob Griffin also posting three hits for the second time in the series. Adrian Salazar added two hits, and he and Anastacio Salas each had two RBIs.

Lewis became just the fifth player in program history to have five-plus RBIs in a game and the first since the 2020 season.

Hayden Sandman (3-2) gave the Spirit five strong innings on the mound, where he tallied seven strikeouts in earning the win. Josiah Dominguez and Juan Navarrete worked four scoreless innings in relief.

GAME 2: The Master's 12, OUAZ 4
OUAZ opened a 2-1 lead with RBIs from Rene Brockman and TD Walker, but the Mustangs scored 11 consecutive runs with five in the fifth and three in both the sixth and seventh innings to notch the series split.

Lewis picked up another two hits with a run scored in the game. Deon Reese also had two hits for the Spirit.

Gage Johnson (1-5) suffered the loss by allowing five runs on five hits in 4.1 innings.

The Spirit will host Benedictine Mesa on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in their final mid-week home game of the season.
