Baseball Game Notes -- Week 6

The OUAZ baseball team steps out of conference play this week and will head to Tucson to play five games at the Tucson Invitational. The Spirit will play Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Thursday at 1:30 p.m. They are also scheduled to face Jamestown on Thursday at 10 a.m. and a doubleheader on Friday at 10 a.m.

Every game of the Tucson Invitational is being played at the Kino Sports Complex. Tickets are $7/day or $30/week, and no outside food or beverage is allowed.

OUAZ heads south at 7-14 on the season and has dropped eight of its past nine games played. The Spirit is 1-1 at a neutral site, and 2-9 in all games played away from home.

Entering the week, OUAZ is batting .227 with a .663 OPS. The team is scoring 5.48 runs on 6.90 hits per game. They have scored in double figures five times and twice had 10-plus hits in a game.

Adrian Salazar leads the Spirit with 27 hits and a .386 batting average. Salazar has a double, two triples, and five home runs while driving in 20. He ranks ninth in the GSAC in batting average, while his .671 slugging percentage is sixth in the conference. Salazar's five home runs are tied for the program record for home runs in a season.

Rene Brockman is batting .291 with 16 hits and nine RBIs. He had a six-game hitting streak snapped at Vanguard on Saturday. During the run, Brockman went 10 for 23 to raise his batting average by nearly 100 points.

Nathan Tarver has 13 hits and a .283 batting average while leading the team with five doubles. Deon Reese has driven in 12 runs with nine hits and three doubles. Calvin Colon-Baez is batting .286 with a homer and three RBIs, and Nicholas Lustig has a pair of home runs.

The OUAZ pitching staff maintains a 6.27 ERA and 1.78 WHIP. The Spirit is third in the GSAC by posting 9.21 strikeouts per nine innings, and the opposition is batting .299.

Hayden Sandman leads the team with five starts, and 20.1 innings pitched. He has gone 1.2 with a 4.87 ERA and 20 strikeouts. Gage Johnson is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts at 16 innings pitched. Johnson has tallied 20 strikeouts, and he is holding the opposition to a .226 batting average. Anthony Quattrocchi leads the Spirit with 23 strikeouts while going 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA.
