Surprise, Ariz.-- OUAZ Baseball split Saturday's doubleheader on the road against Embry-Riddle, dominating game one 20-4 in a seven-inning mercy rule before falling 7-5 in game two. Despite the split, the Spirit secured the series victory 3-1 over the Eagles, improving to 32-14 overall and 16-8 in GSAC play. With the result, OUAZ has officially clinched a spot in the upcoming conference tournament.
The Spirit came out firing in game one, putting up runs in five of the six innings they came to the plate, including a massive nine-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Joel Esparza led the offensive explosion with three hits and four RBIs, while Evan Mendoza added a three-run home run as part of the 14-hit effort. Chaz Clemons and Rolen Driscoll each contributed multi-hit performances as OUAZ capitalized on timely hitting and patience at the plate, drawing 10 walks. On the mound, Brandon Enders earned the win after tossing five solid innings, allowing just two runs while striking out three.
Game two saw OUAZ jump out to an early lead once again, highlighted by a three-run home run from Mendoza in the first inning. The Spirit added another run in the second to take a 4-0 advantage, but momentum shifted in the later innings. Embry-Riddle chipped away before a five-run sixth inning gave the Eagles the lead for good. OUAZ threatened in the seventh and pushed across one run on an RBI single from Rolen Driscoll, but ultimately fell just short, 7-5.
OUAZ will now turn its attention to the final regular season series of the year as they return home to face The Master's. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at KC Royals Practice Field 6.
