Spirit and Lions Trade Shutouts to Open Weekend Series

COSTA MESA, Calif. – In a rematch of last season's GSAC Championship Series, the OUAZ baseball team and No. 13 Vanguard traded shutouts in the first two games of their four-game weekend series. Vanguard won the first game 4-0, and then OUAZ came back to win game two 7-0.

The day's results leave the Spirit at 7-12 overall and 3-7 in conference play. Vanguard now sits at 20-4 and 4-2.

GAME 1: Vanguard 4, OUAZ 0
Vanguard took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and held that advantage until the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff single and a Spirit error had two on and nobody out, Aki Buckson hit a 3-run homer to left to give the Lions a 4-0 advantage.

OUAZ had scoring chances in the second and third innings but, in the end, went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position.

Adrian Salazar and Griffin Hagen each finished 2 for 4 in the game.

Anthony Quattrocchi (1-2) allowed the four runs (three earned) on four hits with five strikeouts in taking the loss.

GAME 2: OUAZ 7, Vanguard 0
Salazar hit a second-inning grand slam – the first in program history – and OUAZ never looked back to split the first day of the series. The slam was one of three hits in the game for Salazar. Ben Lewis added an RBI double in the sixth inning.

Tanner Fallon (1-0) worked four scoreless with six strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. Tyler Bare allowed one hit in his two innings, and then Nicholas Lustig posted a perfect seventh with two strikeouts to complete the shutout.

The teams will wrap up the series with another doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon (AZ).
