Solid Pitching Helps Baseball Split at No. 6 Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A strong day on the mound led the OUAZ baseball team to a doubleheader split at No. 6 Westmont on Friday morning at Russel Carr Field. OUAZ took the opener 6-5 before Westmont came back to win the second game, 3-0.

OUAZ ends the day at 14-19 overall and 6-11 in the GSAC.

GAME 1: OUAZ 6, Westmont 5
Hayden Sandman held the Warriors to three runs on six hits over 5.2 innings to win the opener. After Juan Navarrete and Jeffrey Gehr each allowed a run in relief, Anthony Quattrocchi pitched the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit for the save.

The win was the first over a team ranked in the NAIA top 10 in program history.

Tied at 1-1 through four innings, the Spirit scored four times in the top of the fifth. Adrian Salazar and Nathan Tarver drove in runs to start the frame before Casey Downs hit a 2-run home run to cap the scoring.

Tarver added an RBI single in the seventh inning, which proved to be the difference as the Warriors put up single runs in each of the fourth through eighth innings.

Salazar finished with three hits, and Tarver had three RBIs. Nicholas Lustig added two hits and two runs scored.

GAME 2: Westmont 3, OUAZ 0
OUAZ only managed two hits from Salazar and a third from Lustig in the nightcap. Each guy had a double, but the Spirit was hitless in eight at-bats with a runner in scoring position. They loaded the bases with one out in the fifth but could not get a run home.

The Spirit pitchers held Westmont to just four hits, but one was an RBI double and another a solo home run. Tyler Bare took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in 2.1 innings. Tommy Koloski pitched the final 3.2 innings and allowed just the solo home run with three strikeouts.

The teams will close out this series – the first between the teams since 2019  on Saturday with another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
