Baseball Rallies Twice to Defeat Embry-Riddle in High Scoring Night at Surprise Stadium

SURPRISE, Ariz. – It took a pair of rallies, but the OUAZ baseball team found a way to win its series opener against Embry-Riddle 17-14 on Thursday night at Surprise Stadium.

OUAZ (2-0) trailed 11-4 entering the bottom of the third inning after seeing Embry-Riddle (4-4) score six times in the top of the third. After getting one run back in the bottom of the third, the Spirit tied a school record by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-11 lead.

The advantage was 13-11 when the Eagles went back in front with a three-run sixth inning. The Spirit responded again with three runs in their half of the seventh and an additional run in the eighth.

Juan Navarrete worked a perfect eighth inning on the mound for OUAZ, and then Josiah Dominguez worked around a walk in the ninth to notch his first save of the season.

Rene Brockman provided a boost to the Spirit offense with a two-run home run in that fourth inning after he tripled and scored in the third inning. He joined Calvin Colon-Baez and Kalani Klepfer as Spirit players to post two hits and score three runs.

Deon Reese had a double and four runs batted in, while Adrian Salazar added three RBI while picking up his 200th career hit with a run-scoring single in the second inning. TD Walker also had a pair of RBI.

OUAZ needed just 13 hits to score its 17 runs as they took advantage of 11 walks and four hit batters. They finished 7 of 19 with runners in scoring position and 2 for 6 with the bases loaded. That helped overcome the 21 hits by the Eagles – tied for the most allowed in a game by OUAZ – which included five extra-base hits.

The teams will play game two of the series on Friday at 5 p.m. at Surprise Stadium.
