Baseball Splits Day One of Jessup Series

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The first day of GSAC action saw the OUAZ baseball team split a doubleheader with William Jessup on KC Royals 6. OUAZ dropped the opener 10-2 before taking game two, 5-0.

OUAZ found itself in a hole early in game one as William Jessup scored three runs in the top of the first on its way to a 10-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth. The only Spirit runs came on a 2-run homer from Jacob Griffin with two outs in the ninth.

The Spirit finished with seven hits in the opener, but only three came in the first seven innings off the Warriors' starting pitcher, Danny Chavez. Nathan Tarver had a pair of doubles, while Adrian Salazar also had two hits.

Hayden Sandman (1-1) gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits in 1.2 innings. Jeffrey Gehr worked two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts.

After watching the Spirit offense struggle in the first game, Gage Johnson (1-0) shut down Jessup in the nightcap. In 6.2 innings of work, Johnson allowed just two hits and zero runs with seven strikeouts.

He got all the run support he needed in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Takaaki Tsuji and a 2-run double from Griffin with the bases loaded four batters later. For the final margin, Rene Brockman and TD Walker would add RBIs in the fifth inning.

Seven different Spirit players had a hit in the team's 7-hit attack. Micah Barkenhagen added a double, and Salazar had a triple.

The two teams will complete their weekend series on Saturday with another doubleheader. The action begins at 11 a.m. at Centennial High School in Peoria.
