Wild Day at the Ballpark Ends in Split

PEORIA, Ariz. – The second day of the weekend series between OUAZ and William Jessup saw just about everything as the teams split the doubleheader to wrap up the GSAC Series of the Week. In a wild game to start the day, William Jessup came out with a 13-12 win before the Spirit took the second game, 5-2.

It wasn't looking good for the Spirit in the day's opener as the Warriors scored five times in the top of the first and then retired the first two OUAZ batters in the bottom of the frame. Things turned with a single, two doubles, and an error leading to three runs in the inning.

Things took another turn in the seventh inning as William Jessup scored seven times in their half to extend their 6-5 lead into a 13-5 advantage. OUAZ again responded and matched the seven spot with Randall Hutson delivering a two-run double to complete the outburst.

That hit would be the last as Jessup's closer Marlin Brucato retired seven of the final eight Spirit batters to save the win for the Warriors.

Jacob Griffin had two hits – including a double – and three RBIs in the game. Clayton Ross homered and drove in two while TD Walker added a pair of hits.

The two team's combined to use 13 pitchers and throw 381 pitches.

Tyler Bare gave the Spirit 3.2 innings of relief with just one run allowed on three hits.

Game two saw Anthony Quattrocchi (1-0) make his season debut and shut down the Warriors' lineup. In six innings of work, he allowed just one hit – a solo home run to lead off the second inning – while setting the program record with 12 strikeouts.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Nicholas Lustig hit a 2-run home run down the left field line that put the Spirit in front. Calvin Colon-Baez added a solo shot over the left-center field wall in the fifth inning, and he drove in another run with a double in the sixth inning.

After Jessup got a run in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate, Tommy Koloski came on to get the game's final two outs for his first save.
