Salazar Homers Twice as Spirit Win Season Opener

SURPRISE, Ariz. – For the first time in program history, the OUAZ baseball team won its season opener as the Spirit recorded nine hits in a 10-2 win over Park Gilbert on Tuesday evening at KC Royals 6.

Adrian Salazar gave OUAZ (1-0) a 2-0 lead with a 2-run home run to left in the bottom of the first inning. Park Gilbert (0-1) tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning before the Spirit countered with two more in the bottom of the fifth.

Nathan Tarver delivered a 3-run double to cap a four-run sixth inning for the Spirit, and then Salazar hit another 2-run shot to left to cap the scoring in the bottom of the eighth.

Salazar finished the game 2 for 4 with the first multi-home run game in program history. His four RBI give him 101 in his OUAZ career, and he sits one hit shy of 200. Tarver also drove in four runs, with Deon Reese and Clayton Ross adding an RBI each.

Brian Camacho led the Spirit with three hits, while Kalani Klepfer had two hits. Ben Lewis had the team's other double.

OUAZ used eight different pitchers to slow the Buccaneers' offense. Tanner Fallon started and went one inning without allowing a hit and recording one strikeout. Kapono Rawlins (1-0) earned the win by getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth.

Josiah Dominguez threw two innings and recorded five strikeouts without allowing a baserunner. He was followed by Cole Tidd and Carlos Dominguez, who each pitched a perfect inning. The last four Spirit pitchers retired the final 13 Park hitters of the game.

This weekend, the Spirit will be back in action with a three-game series against Embry-Riddle in Surprise Stadium. The action begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, with Saturday's first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
