OUAZ Travels to Langston for Saturday’s SAC Opener

Spirit face first road test against ranked opponent

>>> The OUAZ football team will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they travel to Langston, Okla., to face No. 14 Langston University in the first-ever Sooner Athletic Conference football game.

>>> Kickoff from W.E. Anderson Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT (12 p.m. AT).

Spirit Notes
>>> OUAZ will make its first-ever road trip this week as they make the 1,000-plus mile journey to Langston. This is the first of three trips for the Spirit that are over 1,000 miles from campus.

>>> The game is the first conference game for OUAZ and the first game between conference opponents in SAC history.

>>> OUAZ opened this inaugural season with a 51-19 win over CETYS Universidad on Aug. 25 at Spirit Field.

>>> Head Coach Mike Nesbitt improved to 26-17 all-time in his fifth season overall. He is 1-0 in one season at OUAZ.

>>> Saturday's game against the Lions will be the first meeting between the two programs.

>>> It is also the first OUAZ game against a team from Oklahoma and the SAC.

>>> Langston is ranked 14th in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll that was released on Aug. 6.

>>> Saturday is the first game of the season for Langston.

>>> The Lions finished 10-1 last season with their only loss coming in the first round of the NAIA Football Championship Series.

>>> Head Coach Quinton Morgan begins his fourth season leading the Lions with a 21-4 all-time record.

Inside the Numbers
>>> OUAZ gained 484 yards of total offense in the win over CETYS. The Spirit ran 57 plays and averaged 8.5 yards per play.

>>> The Spirit offense took the field for 12 drives and scored a touchdown on six of those possessions. On defense, OUAZ allowed three touchdowns on 13 drives and forced five three-and-outs.

>>> OUAZ went 5 of 9 on 3rd-down in the opener while converting all three 3rd-downs in the fourth quarter. They held CETYS to 2 of 14 on 3rd-down.

>>> OUAZ was able to win the opener despite being negative-3 in the turnover battle. They also had just 24 minutes, 15 seconds of possession.

>>> The Spirit defense lived in the backfield against CETYS, totaling 18 tackles-for-loss (65 yards) and six sacks (40 yards).

>>> OUAZ recorded a pair of blocked kicks in the opener, including a punt that resulted in a safety, and a field goal.

Quarterback Notes
>>> Jack Graham threw for 308 yards and four touchdowns in his first career start. He finished 16 of 26 with two interceptions.

>>> Graham's second pass attempt of the game was an 86-yard touchdown to Brandon McLaughlin and the longest pass of the game.

>>> Graham also ran three times for 13 yards, including a long of 11 yards.

Running Back Notes
 >>> Marcelous Chester-Riley led the team with 11 rushing attempts and he gained 41 yards for an average of 3.7 yards per carry.

>>> Chester-Riley scored a 19-yard touchdown in the first quarter for his longest run of the game.

>>> Chester-Riley also had three catches for 47 yards.

>>> Kristopher Ewens carried the ball eight times and tied for the team lead with 48 yards.

>>> Shamar Moreland gained 48 yards on three carries, including a 36-yard scoring run.

>>> Joshua Vizcaya had five carries for 19 yards. He also made three catches for 47 yards and one touchdown.

Receiver Notes
>>> Brandon McLaughlin led the receiving core with 139 yards on three catches. He gained 86 yards on his touchdown reception on the second play of the game.

>>> Jeremiah Greylock finished with three catches for 13 yards and one touchdown.

Defensive Notes
>>> Amare Burks led the Spirit with seven total tackles and five solo tackles.

>>> Kenneth Steele Jr. made six tackles with three tackles-for-loss (15 yards) and two sacks (14 yards).

>>> Marcos Garcia also had six tackles, including two tackles-for-loss (13 yards), one sack (10 yards), one forced fumble, and one pass break-up.

>>> Jevan Hogan totaled two pass break-ups and had one blocked kick to go with his two tackles.

>>> Da'Shawn Holcombe made five tackles while adding one blocked kick and one PBU.

Special Teams Notes
>>> Moreland had a stellar day returning kicks against CETYS, finishing with 128 kickoff return yards and 99 punt return yards.

>>> Moreland returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown and he also had a 75-yard kickoff return.

>>> John Williams was a perfect 7 of 7 on PAT attempts.

>>> Williams lone field goal attempt from 38 yards was no good.

>>> Williams also punted one time for 47 yards.

>>> In eight kickoffs, Williams had zero touchbacks.
