OUAZ Upset in GSAC Semifinals

SURPRISE, Ariz. – On the day they moved into the NAIA Coaches Poll for the first time in program history, the 24th-ranked OUAZ women's tennis team fell to San Diego Christian in the semifinals of the GSAC Tournament at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.

OUAZ (12-8) fell behind early as San Diego Christian (6-10) secured the doubles point. The Spirit opened doubles with a 6-2 win from Paulette Careaga & Johanna Sotelo-Mena on court No. 1. However, the Hawks took the other two matches with a No. 3 pair earning a 6-4 win to secure the point.

Singles play began with San Diego Christian winning court No. 5 for a 2-0 lead. The Spirit claimed their first point with a 6-1, 6-1 win from Sotelo-Mena on court No. 2. Careaga followed on court No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

With the remaining three matches being decided in a third set, SDCC would pick up wins on courts No. 3 and No. 6 to clinch to dual and advance to Thursday's championship match.

The result leaves the Spirit needing an at-large invite to the NAIA National Championship. The 24-team field will be announced on May 3.
