Spirit Win Stay Perfect with 5-2 Win

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's tennis team continued its record start to a season with a 5-2 win over NCAA D2 for Western New Mexico on Saturday evening at the Paseo Tennis Center. The win moved the Spirit to 3-0 for the first time in program history.

It wasn't the best start to the match for the Spirit as Western New Mexico (2-2) earned the doubles point with wins in two of the three matches. OUAZ did see its No. 2 team of Paulette Careaga and Antonia Kostoff earn a 6-2 win.

The momentum turned in the singles matches and started with Giulia Leali winning the No. 1 match 6-0, 6-0 for the second straight day. The win was her ninth all-time to tie the OUAZ program record.

Careaga put the Spirit in front by winning her No. 4 singles bout 6-1, 6-1. Johanna Sotelo-Mena scored another point for OUAZ with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 2 singles. After Western New Mexico won the No. 6 singles, Kostoff clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the No. 3 singles.

Tiana Pritts added the final tally in the No. 5 singles with a 10-8 score in the third set.

OUAZ will now travel to Florida to play three matches, starting on Thursday at St. Thomas.
