Baseball Split Friday’s Doubleheader with Corban

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team split a pair of games against Corban on Friday at KC Royals 6, winning the opener 11-4 before falling in the nightcap, 3-1.

The first game of the day was tied a 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Adrian Salazar hit a 3-run home run to left field – his third of the season – to put the Spirit in front 4-1. After Corban tied the game in the top of the fifth, OUAZ went ahead for good in the bottom of the inning on an RBI from Nathan Tarver.

OUAZ blew the game open with five runs in their half of the seventh inning with a 2-run double from Deon Reese the critical hit.

Reese and Brian Camacho had two hits apiece to lead the Spirit's eight-hit effort in the win. Tarver and Roger Alexander added doubles.

Hayden Sandman (1-0) picked up the win with five innings of work. He allowed four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Tyler Bare threw three scoreless innings, and Cole Tidd worked a perfect ninth.

Game two saw Corban starter Zack Simon strikeout 12 Spirit hitters in six innings. OUAZ managed only five hits in the game, with two coming from the bat of Salazar. The Spirit's lone run came on a double-play groundout by Nicholas Lustig in the bottom of the sixth.

Two of the OUAZ hits were triples – from Salazar and Casey Downs – and they left five runners on base.

Tommy Koloski (0-2) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with six strikeouts in five innings. Lucky Ramanathan pitched a scoreless sixth, and Kapono Rawlins did the same in the seventh.

The two teams will close out this four-game series on Saturday at 11 a.m. on Rangers 4.
