Spirit Ride Record Start to Win at ERAU Spring Invite

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The 10th-ranked OUAZ men's golf team lapped the field at the ERAU Spring Invitational and earned a 45-stroke victory during the 54-hole event played Sunday through Tuesday at the Antelope Hills South Course.

OUAZ started with a school-record round of 26-under (262) on Sunday to set the tone for the week. They followed that with an 11-under (277) on Monday before going 3-over (291) on Tuesday. All three rounds were the lowest rounds of the day in the seven-team field. The final score of 34-under (830) is six shots clear of the previous OUAZ record for a 54-hole event and Monday's 13-under broke the old school record by 13 strokes.

The fast start came behind school-record rounds of 10-under (62) from both Mason Domecq and Hector Barnetche on Sunday. Domecq recorded three eagles and four birdies in the round while Barnetche had two eagles and seven birdies.

Domecq came back to shoot 4-under (68) on Monday and then even-par (72) on Tuesday to win the event at 14-under (202). The score established the OUAZ record for a 54-hole tournament. Domecq led the field by playing both the par-4 and par-5 holes at 7-under par for the week.

After shooting 5-under (67) in the first round, Phil Williams shot 4-under (68) and 1-under (71) to secure a second-place finish at 10-under (206). He led the field with 17 birdies and he went 5-under on the par-4 holes during the three rounds.

Barnetche followed his fast start with rounds of 1-over (73) and even-par (72) to earn a third-place finish. His 9-under (207) was aided by 13 birdies and 32 pars and included finishing the par-5 holes and 5-under par.

Beng Keat Lim and Igor Haenel completed the OUAZ lineup at the event. Lim finished eighth at 1-over (217) and matched Domecq by shooting 7-under on the par-5 holes. Haenel ended tied for 13th at 7-over (223).

Colby Watkins gave the Spirit a fourth finisher inside the top-5 playing as an individual. Watkins shot 3-under (213) for his third top-5 finish of the season.

The Spirit will now prepare for their trip to Nevada and the Battle at Primm on March 22-23.
