SURPRISE, ARIZ. - OUAZ women's soccer hit the road for the first time in 2019 last weekend when they went to Oregon. It was mixed results in terms of the final scores, as the Spirit finished the trip 1-1.
OUAZ defeated Warner Pacific 3-0 last Friday, and then came out to a good start against Corban. Heading into halftime up 2-0, the Spirit allowed four goals in the final 45 and lost 4-2.
While the final looks bad at first glance, the box score does not tell the whole story.
"Soccer is a fickle sometimes," OUAZ head coach
Skelly Kellar said. "They had a couple of bounces go their way, and they punished us."
"I thought we had a really good response, and things did not go our way," Kellar added. "We get up for three different headers and hit posts. (Corban's) keeper makes a couple of really good saves. That's the game sometimes."
OUAZ returns to Spirit Field this week, a place where they have yet to lose this season. Despite having to clean things up from last weekend, the game plan will stay simple for this weekend.
"Just go battle," Kellar said. "When we get our chances, we've got to take care of them. We have to defend better as a team. It's everything that you need, except you need to take it up a notch because the intensity is going to be there."
THIS WEEK FOR WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Spirit return for a two game homestand starting with Embry-Riddle on Thursday at 5:30PM. They wrap up the weekend when they take on Marymount California on Saturday at 10AM.
HOW TO FOLLOW
Live video of both games will be available on the OUAZ Game Central portal and the NAIA Network for $7.95. The NAIA Network is available on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV devices. Live stats will also be available through Game Central at portal.stretchinternet.com/ottawaaz.
AGAINST THE OPPOSITION
The only meeting between OUAZ and Embry-Riddle came in 2017, where the Eagles picked up a 5-0 victory.
The Spirit have also seen Marymount California once, downing the Mariners 2-0 in a neutral site game on September 3, 2018.
NOTABLE QUOTABLE
"We talked early in the season about breaking the season up into blocks. We ended the first block 4-1, so we're on to block two. Embry-Riddle is going to be a really good challenge, they're a very good team. It's going to be the toughest game we have to date." – Kellar, when talking about how his team is coming together and how they break down the season.
