LA VERNE, Calif. – The OUAZ men's water polo team made some history on Saturday when they defeated Caltech 12-7 to record the program's first win of this inaugural season. The victory came in the second game of the day after falling to La Verne, 15-7, at the Inland Empire Classic.
In the victory over Caltech,
Shaine Sargis scored four goals to lead a group of six different players that scored in the game.
Zackery Whiddon made nine saves between the posts.
Each team was credited with 28 shots in the game. The Spirit took advantage on the power-play with three goals on five chances while holding the Beavers scoreless in their five opportunities.
The first game of the day saw the Spirit trailing La Verne 5-4 after the first quarter, but the Leopards scored eight of the game's next nine goals to pull away. OUAZ had just 21 shots and was 1 for 6 on the power play while La Verne took 37 shots and scored on 4 of 7 power-play chances.
Weston Restad scored four goals in the loss with
James Martin scoring twice.
OUAZ concludes play at the weekend tournament on Sunday with games against Redlands and Riverside City College.
