OUAZ Splits on First Day of NAIA Finals

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The first day of action at the NAIA Men's Water Polo Finals saw OUAZ come away with a split to earn the No. 2 seed entering Saturday's championship rounds. OUAZ started the day with a 21-3 win over UC Merced. The Spirit then fell to Westcliff 13-11 in a thrilling overtime contest.

The day's results set up a semifinal match featuring OUAZ and UC Merced at noon on Saturday. The winner will play Westcliff for the 2022 title at 3 p.m.

In Friday's win over UC Merced, the Spirit scored 18 consecutive goals during a stretch and were never challenged. They took 32 shots and allowed only 16.

Johnathan Wong led OUAZ with five goals, while Will Farrier scored three. Zackery Whiddon and Pavle Ristic split the game in goal with five saves apiece.

The second game saw OUAZ and Westcliff each use scoring runs to eventually send the game to overtime. In the end, the game featured four ties and two lead changes.

Trailing 6-4 midway through the third quarter, OUAZ went on a 6-2 scoring run to lead 10-8 with 4:19 remaining in regulation. Westcliff would score twice to force the extra time and then tally the first two goals in OT. The Spirit pulled one back before the Warriors added the final tally to secure the No. 1 seed.

Roland Mantecon scored four times for the Spirit in the loss. Wong added three goals. Clay Gyde made 10 saves in goal.
