The 2019 season has been a year of firsts for OUAZ men's water polo. First season, first game, first win. On Friday, the Spirit added first home game and first home win to that list.
The Spirit outscored the University of Arizona Club Team 4-0 in the first quarter, and OUAZ held the Wildcats at the water's edge to pick up a 14-9 victory.
James Martin led the way for OUAZ offensively, scoring eight goals on 11 shots. Five of Martin's goals came in the final quarter.
Shaine Sargis,
Tristin D'Ambrosi,
Dylan Van Horn and
Nathan Swank also found their way into the goal column.
OUAZ outscored Arizona 8-1 in the first and third quarters combined. The Wildcats made a push to get back even a couple of times, doing exactly that halfway through the third quarter, but the Spirit ultimately pulled away.
"Arizona had a lot of energy, they had a lot of fight in them," Spirit head coach
Austen Ramer said. "So it was a good measuring stick as far as how momentum can swing."
Friday's home opener was not on the docket when the original schedule came out. It was a welcoming surprise to the program, giving the team a chance to play in front of the OUAZ fans.
"When I was first putting the schedule together, I literally just emailed every single program," Ramer said. "It was just with varsity teams, I wasn't really looking at the club level. But, Victor [Nguyen], the coach for the University of Arizona, reached out to me and said, 'hey, we're going to come out for a tournament in Southern California, we'd love to stop by and get a game'."
The next time the Spirit hit the pool will be next Thursday when the travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif. to take on Cal Lutheran.
