Surprise, Ariz.-- The OUAZ Spirit turned in one of their most impressive performances of the season on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader against No. 12 Hope International at home. The two wins push OUAZ to 24-10 overall and 10-4 in GSAC play, highlighted by a dramatic walk-off victory in game one and a composed all-around effort in game two.
Game one featured a back-and-forth battle that ultimately ended in thrilling fashion. After falling behind early and surrendering multiple late leads, the Spirit continued to respond offensively. Trailing 9-8 entering the bottom of the ninth, OUAZ capitalized on a defensive miscue to tie the game before Evan Mendoza delivered the game-winning hit, a walk-off RBI single to secure the 10-9 victory. Mendoza led the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Trevor Lesperance and Isaiah Nava each contributed key run-producing performances. On the mound, Kasey Regala provided stability out of the bullpen, tossing two scoreless innings to earn the win.
In game two, the Spirit carried that momentum into a more controlled 6-4 victory. OUAZ broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning, highlighted by Mendoza's solo home run and RBI hits from Chaz Clemons and Matthew Carter. The Spirit added three more runs in the fifth to create separation, proving to be just enough cushion. Despite a four-run inning from the Royals in the sixth, OUAZ held firm behind strong pitching. Micah Del Rio earned the win with five solid innings, striking out seven, while Tyler Johnson closed the door with two innings of relief to secure the save.
Across the doubleheader, OUAZ showcased resilience and timely execution against a nationally ranked opponent, using clutch hitting and key pitching performances to complete the sweep. The Spirit will look to carry that momentum into the final games of the series, returning to action tomorrow with another doubleheader against the Royals beginning at 4:00 p.m. (MST).
