Surprise, Ariz.-- OUAZ Softball delivered a dominant performance Monday afternoon, sweeping Mount Mary in a home doubleheader with 10-0 and 13-0 five-inning mercy-rule victories. With the pair of wins, the Spirit improve to 8-6 on the season and build strong momentum heading into the start of GSAC conference play later this week.
Game One – OUAZ 10, Mount Mary 0 (5 innings)
The Spirit set the tone early, scoring four runs in the first inning behind a three-run home run to left center from Brianna Humphries. OUAZ continued to apply pressure in the second, erupting for six more runs. Alexis Jimenez delivered a two-RBI double in the inning, while Savannah Sutton drove in a run and reached base twice. Elysa Moreno and Nayeli Inzunza each crossed the plate twice as the Spirit capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting to build a commanding lead.
In the circle, Stephanie Cortazar was outstanding, allowing just one hit over four shutout innings while striking out four to improve to 3-1 on the year. Adyson Creighton closed out the fifth inning to secure the combined two-hit shutout as OUAZ finished with seven hits and error-free defense.
Game Two – OUAZ 13, Mount Mary 0 (5 innings)
OUAZ's offense exploded once again in game two, plating nine runs in the opening frame. Humphries and Savannah Sutton each drove in runs early, and Alexis Jimenez added a two-run single to help break the game open. The Spirit added four more runs in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Ava Seguin and a two-run double from Moreno, who finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Sutton and Seguin each recorded two hits as part of an 11-hit effort.
Alexis Ayersman earned the win in the circle with three hitless innings, while Seguin tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. Senior Savannah Sutton made her collegiate pitching debut in the fifth inning, recording the final out to seal the shutout and complete the sweep.
OUAZ now shifts its focus to GSAC conference play, traveling to Fullerton, California, to face Hope International on Friday, March 6. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for Noon (MST).
