Spirit Sweep Benedictine Mesa Behind Explosive Offense

Surprise, Ariz. — OUAZ secured a dominant doubleheader sweep over Benedictine Mesa, combining explosive offense with strong pitching to control both games.

Game 1 — OUAZ 11, BenU 3

Game one saw the Spirit jump out early and maintain control in an 11-3 victory. OUAZ struck quickly in the first inning when Brianna Humphries launched a three-run home run to score Nayeli Inzunza and Elysa Moreno. The Spirit continued to add runs in the frame as Alexis Jimenez reached on an error that allowed Ava Seguin to score, followed by an Elizabeth Luna RBI single that brought home Jimenez.

OUAZ added another run in the second inning when Ava Seguin doubled to center field to score Humphries. Benedictine Mesa answered with three runs in the third inning to cut into the lead.

The Spirit quickly responded in the fourth. Savannah Sutton reached on an error that allowed two runs to score, and Alexis Rodriguez added a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage. OUAZ sealed the game in the fifth when Sutton brought in two more runs to secure the run-rule victory. Stephanie Cortazar delivered a strong relief appearance in the circle to help close out the win. 

Game 2 — OUAZ 9, BenU 1

Game two was another strong showing from the Spirit as they controlled the contest in a 9-1 victory. OUAZ got the offense rolling in the first inning when Brianna Humphries singled to score Elysa Moreno. Alexis Jimenez followed with an RBI double, and Savannah Sutton added another run with a double of her own.

The Spirit added to the lead in the second inning when Sophie Jackson reached on an error that allowed Kinzy Creighton to cross the plate. Benedictine Mesa managed to score their lone run in the third inning, but OUAZ remained in control.

The Spirit broke the game open in the fifth inning. Brianna Humphries crushed a two-run home run that scored Jackson. Alexis Rodriguez added an RBI groundout, and Angelina Granado ended the game with a two-RBI double. Stephanie Cortazar earned the win in the circle while Ava Seguin closed out the final innings to secure the sweep.
