Tucson, Ariz.-- OUAZ Softball continued its strong play at the Tucson Invitational on Monday, sweeping Haskell in a pair of five-inning mercy-rule victories, 9-0 and 8-0. With the sweep, the Spirit improve to 19-7 overall on the season.
Game One – OUAZ 9, Haskell 0 (5 innings)
Batting as the visiting team, OUAZ wasted no time setting the tone, scoring in the opening inning on an RBI single from Brianna Humphries. The Spirit broke the game open in the second, erupting for seven runs behind a string of timely hits. Savannah Sutton started the rally with an RBI double, while Sophie Jackson added a two-run single. Nayeli Inzunza drove in a run with a double before Humphries capped the inning with a three-run home run to left, extending the lead to 8-0.
OUAZ added one more in the fifth on another RBI knock from Jackson to seal the 9-0 win. The Spirit tallied 15 hits in the game, led by Humphries' 3-for-3, four-RBI performance. Inzunza and Sutton each collected two hits, while Jackson drove in three runs.
In the circle, Alexis Ayersman earned the win, tossing three innings of one-hit softball with five strikeouts. Adyson Creighton closed out the final two innings as the Spirit combined for the shutout, limiting Haskell to just two hits.
Game Two – OUAZ 8, Haskell 0 (5 innings)
In game two, OUAZ continued its dominance, this time as the home team. Elysa Moreno opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single to give the Spirit an early lead. OUAZ broke things open in the third, highlighted by a three-run triple from Alexis Jimenez, followed by a sacrifice fly from Sutton to make it 5-0.
The Spirit added insurance in the fifth as Jimenez delivered again with a two-RBI triple before Sutton drove in the final run with an RBI single to secure the 8-0 victory. Jimenez led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, driving in five runs, while Moreno added two hits and an RBI.
Stephanie Cortazar earned the win in the circle, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing just three hits. Ava Seguin closed out the game with a clean fifth inning to complete the shutout.
OUAZ will now return to GSAC play on Thursday, traveling to Riverside, California, to take on La Sierra. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m.
