Spirit Split the Doubleheader Against UBC

Surprise, Ariz.-- OUAZ Softball split its Friday doubleheader with the UBC Thunderbirds at Willow Canyon High School, dropping game one 10-0 before bouncing back with an impressive 8-2 victory in the nightcap. The split moves the Spirit to 2-4 on the young season.

Game One – UBC 10, OUAZ 0
British Columbia used consistent offense throughout the opener, collecting 17 hits and scoring in five different innings to secure the shutout win. The Thunderbirds plated single runs in the second, third, and fourth before breaking the game open with three runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh. OUAZ was limited to four hits, with Ava Seguin leading the way at 2-for-3, including a double. Savannah Sutton and Nayeli Inzunza added the other hits for the Spirit. Alexis Ayersman took the loss in the circle, allowing two runs (one earned) over three innings. Stephanie Cortazar and Adyson Creighton provided relief as UBC pulled away late.

Game Two – OUAZ 8, UBC 2
The Spirit responded in a big way in game two, striking early and never looking back. Alexis Jimenez jumpstarted the offense in the first inning with a two-run double to right center, and Nayeli Inzunza followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0. After UBC answered with a run in the second, Savannah Sutton delivered a two-run double down the left field line in the bottom half to extend the lead to 5-1. Jimenez added another RBI single in the fourth, and aggressive baserunning highlighted the inning as Maddy Syverson stole home to push the advantage to 7-2. Elysa Moreno capped the scoring in the fifth with an RBI groundout.

Jimenez finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Sutton went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Granado added two hits and scored twice as part of a nine-hit attack. In the circle, Ayersman turned in a complete-game performance, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out two to earn the win.

OUAZ will conclude its week on Saturday, February 14, with a doubleheader against Bushnell. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. (MST) at Willow Canyon High School in Surprise, Arizona.
