Spirit Fall in Doubleheader in Final Home Games of Season

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ suffers a sweep in today's doubleheader at the hands of Park Gilbert University. The Spirit dropped all four games in the series and their record now sits at 24-18 overall and 4-12 in conference.

Game one was close but ended by a score of 6-5 in favor of Park Gilbert.

OUAZ scored their first run in the second inning on a Park Gilbert error after being down 4-0 to start the game. OUAZ added one run in the third and fourth inning. Alexis Jimenez brought one in on a sacrifice fly in the third inning and Karlene Chavarria roped an RBI double in the fourth. OUAZ brought in two more runs in the sixth inning but their comeback effort fell just short. Karlene Chavarria continued her good day with a sacrifice fly and Serena Shine singled in another run.

Alexis Ayersman got the start and went 4.1 innings while allowing 5 earned runs and striking out 2. Stephanie Cortazar finished off the game, going 2.2 innings and allowing 1 earned run. Not quite enough to earn their team a win but a solid effort nonetheless.

Game two was a blowout loss that ended with a score of 18-8.

The OUAZ offense got going in the second inning, bringing in one run on a Nayeli Inzunza RBI double. OUAZ would score another 4 runs in the third inning and 3 more runs in the fourth. Savannah Sutton, Isabella Rodriguez, and Nayeli Inzunza all had RBIs in the third inning. Mia Casadei doubled in a run in the fourth. Savannah Sutton followed that with a sacrifice fly and then Isabella Rodriguez would double in another run. Unfortunately, that's where it ended for OUAZ's offense.

The pitching didn't have it in game two. Leila Elias got the start and went 1 inning giving up 6 earned runs. Kaylee Ramirez came in and notched 4 quality innings of relief, only allowing 1 run. Stephanie Cortazar would then come in and allow 6 runs in 1 inning.

The Spirit's next game will be against Nelson Arizona in a doubleheader on April 15th. First pitch of game one will be at 12PM MST at Rose Mafford Complex.
