Phoenix, Ariz.- OUAZ Softball sweeps the doubleheader against Nelson Arizona (10-28), with a game one win of 8-7 and a game two victory of 9-1. The give the Spirit a 26–18 overall record, with a 4-12 record in conference play.
The Spirit would take game one in an 8-7 extra innings victory. The Spirit were trailing going into the sixth inning, before Mia Casadei hit a go-ahead three-run homer for her team leading sixth of the year. The Spirit would not be able to hold their two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh, as a two-run single for Nelson would send the game into extra innings. Casadei would then hit a go-ahead double in the eighth inning for her fourth RBI of the game, and Alexis Jimenez would get an RBI hit to give the Spirit an 8-6 lead. OUAZ would give up one run in the bottom of the eighth, but were able to hold on for an 8-7 game one victory.
The Spirit would take game two behind a strong offensive and pitching performance with a 9-1 victory to earn the doubleheader sweep. In the circle, Leila Elia got the ball and had her best start of the year as she went 5.1 Innings and only allowed one run on five hits. Alexis Ayersman would throw 1.2 Innings in relief, shutting down the Warriors offense, allowing no runs and no hits. Dayzee Wong had a big day at the plate as she went 2/4, knocked in two RBIs, scored twice, and also hit her second homer of the season. Jimenez, and Elysa Moreno also had great days at the plate as they each went 3/4, each scoring a run, and each knocking in an RBI.
The Spirit will finish the season next week on the road against Arizona Christian. The series will begin on Tuesday, April 22nd with a doubleheader. Game 1 will be at 4:30PM, with game 2 scheduled to start at 6:30PM (MST). The series will conclude on Wednesday, March 23rd with another Doubleheader against ACU. Game 1 will start at 4:30PM and be followed with a 6:30PM (MST) scheduled start time for Game 2.
