Spirit Split Doubleheader to Open Series Against Park-Gilbert

Tempe, Ariz.- OUAZ splits the doubleheader with Park Gilbert today. The Spirit now sit at a record of 27-16 while being 10-8 in GSAC conference play.

Game one ended in a slugfest win. The Spirit came out on top by a score of 17-8.

OUAZ didn't waste any time in game one plating 4 runs in the first and second inning to jump out to an 8-0 lead. Logan Meyer got the party started with an RBI single which was quickly followed by a Nano Perez RBI knock. Joel Esparza would find his way home on a passed ball and Gabe DeJesus capped off the first inning with another RBI hit, scoring Nano Perez. Joey Winters and Nicholas Lustig both roped RBI doubles to jumpstart the big second inning. Logan Meyer and Nano Perez would keep the Spirit's run parade going with two more RBI singles. OUAZ then added 6 more runs in the fourth inning. Nicholas Lustig would score on a Park Gilbert error and then Nano Perez would score Dante Leach on an RBI triple. Gabe DeJesus registered a team at-bat with an RBI groundout. Soon after, Matthew Carter broke things open with a 2 RBI double. Joey Winters would cap things off in the fourth inning with an RBI single. OUAZ was held scoreless until the sixth when Christian Powell recorded an RBI. The Spirit added two more runs in the seventh inning on a Luke Hyzdu steal of home and a Nano Perez RBI triple.

The pitching for OUAZ got the job done in game one. Micah Del Rio started and went 5 innings allowing 6 earned runs and striking out 2. Mackenzie Salmon would follow in relief and toss 2 shutout innings to keep Park Gilbert's offense in check. Josiah Dominguez came on for the final 2 innings and only allowed 1 earned run to score. An all around solid effort for the OUAZ pitching staff.

Game two didn't go quite as well for OUAZ, ending in a 16-6 loss.

Dante Leach was able to record an RBI in the first inning for OUAZ on a single to center field. Nano Perez added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single of his own. In the fifth inning, Gabe DeJesus would score on a Park Gilbert error and then Logan Meyer would double in 2 more runs. Dane Fraser capped off the fifth inning with an RBI single to score Meyer. Unfortunately, that's where it ended for the Spirit offensively.

The pitching staff didn't have their best stuff in game two. Austin Humphres went 2.1 innings while giving up 6 earned runs and striking out none, a rare blemish on the southpaw's great season. The rest of the bullpen would combine for 3.2 innings of work while giving up 10 earned runs.

OUAZ will look to win the series tomorrow against Park Gilbert in another doubleheader. First pitch of game one will be at 11AM MST at Tempe Diablo Baseball Complex.
