OUAZ Pulls Away in Thriller Against Rival ACU

Surprise, Ariz- OUAZ starts GSAC conference play with a thrilling win against crosstown rival Arizona Christian in 4 sets (25-21) (21-25) (25-21) (25-21). A longtime conference showdown sees another OUAZ victory as both teams fought till the end. With the GSAC being arguably the toughest conference in all of NAIA men's volleyball, every game will be a tough matchup. The victory puts the Spirit at an even (4-4) record and a (1-0) record in the GSAC.

Sophomore Horatio Maumasi, was definitely the star in tonight's showdown notching 12 kills on a .381 hitting percentage. The middle blocker was wrecking complete havoc and creating tons of blocking issues for ACU middles. A solid consistent connection between Maumasi and setter Jonathan Worden could be an instant problem for teams in the GSAC. Phoenix native, Jack Hubbard provided another high-level performance following his monster game against Morningside on Monday. Hubbard accounted for 13 kills along with some strong passing off of some tough Firestorm jumpserves. Caeden Salmen continues to be a factor offensively and defensively. The senior put up 13 kills with a tied team high 11 digs. Both Hubbard and Salmen provided some great work defensively eating up tons of ACU swings that would force them into a .157 hitting percentage. Senior Jonathan Worden, not only put in 44 assists in a 4 set match, but also added 5 kills from the opposite position. Abraham Romero subbed in and dished out some great sets to Worden to get the Spirit out of some rotations. Worden was hitting over the block in several instances.

Set one saw both teams scoring back and forth, however the Spirit were on a roll offensively. Eventually the team pushed away at 21-20 going on a 4-0 run that included a Horatio Maumasi bounce and a sweet Jack Hubbard angle kill. Set 2, was unfortunately all ACU after they pushed the lead to as much as 7. The Spirit slowed down a little defensively after great Firestorm service pressure. But, the Spirit didn't go away easily, closing the lead to 1 at 20-21. Following a rough set 2 the rest of the game was all OUAZ. Set 3 saw the Spirit lead by as much as 6 and a huge offense set from Caeden Salmen, who in one instance notched 3 kills in a row. Set 4, was an ultimate team effort from the Spirit who again had an amazing late set run. Tied 17-17, OUAZ went on a 8-3 run to finish the game.

Your OUAZ men's volleyball team will be back at it again tomorrow Thursday, March 6th to complete their 3 game homestand and a long stretch of 6 games in 8 days. The game will be in Faith Arena at 6pm and will be streamed on the GSAC Sports Network.
