OUAZ Prevails in Upset Sweep over Cornerstone

Surprise, Ariz- OUAZ came in tonight's matchup as the underdog against #5 ranked Cornerstone. The Spirit not only came up with the victory but swept the Golden Eagles (25-23) (25-22) (25-23). Putting the Spirit above .500 at (5-4) overall.

Freshman Owen Draeger provided his biggest game of the season with 11 kills on an efficient .625 hitting percentage. Back to back performances for the Southern California native, where he has provided an above .600 hitting percentage. Horatio Maumasi, once again proves why he is the one of the top middles in the entire NAIA with a solid 9 kill and 3 block performance. In the past 2 weeks Maumasi has racked up quite the stat sheet and has opposing teams double blocking him on almost every swing. Kansas native Corey Johnson, gave the Spirit 7 kills, but was even better defensively notching 3 straight digs in a rally that occurred in set 3. Sophomore Bodhi Bettes, was phenomenal tonight and likely provided one of his bests performances all season. The libero did an amazing job handling gritty Cornerstone serving and had 12 digs defensively as well. Bettes continues to impress as an underclassmen in a starting role.

After a neck and neck first set, the Spirit were able to pull away after a 23-23 tie. Jack Hubbard was absolutely clutch towards the end of this set not only notching a kill, but ending the set on an absolute highlight level stuff block. Set 2 carried the same intensity as set 1, neither team let the other take a huge lead and pull away. Following a Golden Eagles timeout, at 22-21, the Spirit pulled away once again near the end. Jonathan Worden got himself in the action, with a kill following a perfect set from Caeden Salmen. Set 3, was a thriller in itself as the Spirit at this point were hunting for the sweep. The Spirit mid way through the set, went up 17-12, however Cornerstone was not going away either. The Golden Eagles came all the way back and eventually tied the game at 20. However, the Spirit were able to put any efforts away behind a clutch Caeden Salmen service ace and Horatio Maumasi tip kill. Going against a top 5 team not only gives OUAZ experience against a top program, but the win also gives the committee a chance to take a harder look at the Spirit's resume. A resume that now includes 3 straight wins against quality programs.

Your OUAZ Spirit men's volleyball will return to action next week on Friday, March 14th against #14 Hope International in Fullerton at 6pm. Following that game, the Spirit will play again on Saturday, March 15th at 1pm against #1 Masters University. This Southern California road trip will be the last of the regular season.
