OUAZ Splits Doubleheader to Start Series Versus #25 The Master's

Santa Clarita, Calif.- OUAZ splits the doubleheader today with Masters University. The Spirit now sit at a record of 20-14 on the season as they continue through the remainder of their GSAC matchups.

Game one ended in a 13-8 loss for OUAZ as a late comeback attempt fell just short.

Joel Esparza singled to left field in the first inning to score Logan Meyer, getting things going early on. Unfortunately, the Spirit were held there until the sixth inning when Joel Esparza managed to score on a wild pitch. The Spirit mounted a late comeback with 5 runs in the eighth inning and 1 in the ninth but couldn't quite make up ground. The eighth inning featured a Gabe DeJesus RBI knock and a Joey Winters mammoth grand slam. Gabe DeJesus added one more run in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly.

The pitching for the Spirit didn't have it in game one, allowing 13 runs. Micah Del Rio got the start and went 2 innings giving up 6 earned runs and taking the loss. The bullpen would combine for the rest of the damage going 6 innings and giving up 7 earned runs. Josiah Dominguez managed to work a scoreless eighth inning, getting his job done.

Game two saw the Spirit score another eight runs but manage to hold their lead this time, winning 8-0.

The first inning got going quick with Nicholas Lustig and Joel Esparza both logging RBI knocks. Nicholas Lustig stayed hot in the second with another RBI single, scoring Dante Leach. In the fourth inning, Joey Winters smacked another homerun, his second of the day, to add to OUAZ's lead. The sixth inning saw Matthew Carter blast his first homerun of the season which was followed by a Logan Meyer RBI to keep the rally going. Dante Leach and Joey Winters topped things off with RBIs in the seventh inning. As an offense, the Spirit went for 13 hits and 5 walks.

The pitching was nothing short of phenomenal in this one and it started and ended with Austin Humphres. Humphres went 7 shutout innings against a formidable offense in Masters University while tallying 9 strikeouts and only 2 walks, earning himself the win.

OUAZ will look to take the series tomorrow against Masters University as they've got another doubleheader. First pitch of game one will be at 11AM MST at Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
