OUAZ Falls in Hard Fought Doubleheader Against #6 HIU

Fullerton, Calif.- OUAZ suffers a sweep at the hands of Hope International University. The Spirit now sit at a record of 19-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Game one was a close loss for the Spirit ending by a score of 7-6 in favor of HIU.

The Spirit offense rallied for two runs in the second inning after HIU put up one in the first. Joel Esparza roped an RBI double to score Nicholas Lustig which was followed by a Luke Hyzdu RBI knock. Joey Winters would add another run in the third inning on an RBI double of his own, scoring Matthew Carter. Nicholas Lustig added a run in the seventh with an RBI knock of his own. The OUAZ offense did their best to come back in the ninth inning with a Nicholas Lustig 2 RBI double but eventually fell just short, losing by one.

The pitching for OUAZ was good enough to give them a chance to win. Micah Del Rio was given the start and went 7 innings allowing 4 earned runs in a stellar outing against a lethal offense. The bullpen didn't have their best stuff and ended up costing OUAZ the game in this one.

Game two ended in a blowout 15-7 loss for OUAZ.

The offense got things going early with a 3 spot in the first inning. Owen Prendergast stayed hot at the plate supplying all three runs on a 3-run bomb in the first. The Spirit added another run in the second inning on an HIU error. OUAZ was able to get three runs across in the fifth inning. Greg Bozinovich logged an RBI walk and Gabe DeJesus singled in two runs.

The pitching for OUAZ was subpar in this one. Zach Hangas got the start and went 2.1 innings giving up 5 earned runs with some errors made behind him. Tyler Bare went 1 inning of his own giving up two earned runs. The rest of the pen gave up 5 more earned runs.

OUAZ will look to find their footing in their next matchup against Masters University in a doubleheader on March 28th. Game one will take place at Lou Herwaldt Stadium with first pitch being at 11AM MST.
