OUAZ Sweeps Doubleheader to Earn Series Win Over BenU

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ sweeps the doubleheader against Benedictine Mesa to regain momentum on the year and gain crucial games in the GSAC conference.

Game one ended in a 14-9 slugfest win for OUAZ.

The Spirit fell down 6-1 early but mounted a comeback with 4 runs in the third inning. Joey Winters would score on a passed ball for the first run of the third. Dante Leach would keep things going with a 2 RBI triple to left center field. OUAZ added another 2 runs in the fourth coming on Joey Winters and Joel Esparza RBI singles. Matthew Carter got in on the action in the fifth with an RBI triple of his own. In the sixth inning Joel Esparza was back at it again with another RBI knock to score Kaden Boyle. Nicholas Lustig would add another in the seventh on an RBI single to left. OUAZ scored 4 more in the eighth to pull away for good. Nano Perez, Gabe DeJesus and Joey Winters all had RBIs in the inning. The OUAZ offense recorded 12 hits and 5 walks all together in this one.

The pitching for the Spirit started off with Micah Del Rio who went 3 innings giving up 6 earned runs. Liam Kiffer was called upon in relief and delivered a nice outing of 2.1 innings of 1 run baseball to earn himself the win. Eddie Torres went 1.2 innings only allowing 1 run and Nate Naccarato finished things off with 2 innings of 1 run ball.

Game two would go OUAZ's way via a 5-3 final score, showcasing the Spirits ability to win using both sides of the ball.

OUAZ jumped out to an early lead scoring 1 in the second and 2 in the third inning to go up 3-0. Matthew Carter recorded an RBI in the second to kick things off. Carter was followed up by an Owen Prendergast RBI double and Like Hyzdu scoring on a passed ball. Benedictine Mesa would tie things up 3-3 in the fifth and OUAZ immediately responded with the final 2 runs of the game, sealing their victory. Gabe DeJesus logged an RBI knock that scored two runs with aid from a Benedictine throwing error.

The pitching had a great outing in game two for OUAZ. Hayden Schooler lead the way with 4.1 innings only surrendering 3 runs while striking out 5. Tyler Bare came out of the pen and solidified the victory with a clutch performance of 2.2 perfect innings while also recording 5 strikeouts.

OUAZ is back in action on March 21st against Hope International on the road playing a doubleheader. Game one will be at 11AM MST at Duane Winters Field.
