Spirit Fall in Both Games of Doubleheader to Open GSAC Play

Mesa, Ariz.- OUAZ softball drops two in a row to Benedictine Mesa in their doubleheader today. The Spirit now sit at a record of 18-6 on the season, and 0-2 in conference play.

The Spirit lost the first game by a score of 9-1. The only run of the game came on an Isabella Rodriguez RBI single in the third inning. The pitching got roughed up a bit in this one. Stephanie Cortazar went 4 innings giving up 7 earned runs and Leila Elias came on for 0.1 innings at the end of the game.

Game two ended in a heartbreaking loss by a score of 8-7 with Benedictine Mesa winning in walkoff fashion.

The offense got things going very late. OUAZ notched a 7 spot in the seventh inning to go up 7-5 before eventually succumbing to the Benedictine offense in the last half inning. Nayeli Inzunza launched a solo homerun to score the first run of the inning. Savannah Sutton would then single to center to bring in another 2 runs. Alexis Jimenez would follow with an RBI single of her own and the inning was capped off by a Mia Casadei 3-run bomb.

Alexis Ayersman went 6 innings giving up 8 earned runs. Stephanie Cortazar came on in the seventh and gave up 3 runs (Credited to Ayersman) in the eventual loss to Benedictine Mesa.

The Spirit will look to bounce back tomorrow in another doubleheader once again against Benedictine Mesa. First pitch of game one will be at 12PM MST.
