Spirit Sweep Doubleheader to Earn Series Split Against BenU

Mesa, Ariz.- OUAZ sweeps the doubleheader today against Benedictine Mesa ultimately improving their record to 20-6 on the year, and are now 2-2 in conference play.

Game one was all OUAZ as it ended by a final score of 11-0 in favor of the Spirit.

OUAZ started off hot with a 4 spot in the first inning. Savannah Sutton singled to right field to bring in two runs which was then followed by an Alexis Jimenez RBI. Mia Casadei would bring in another on a single of her own. OUAZ added another 3 runs in the second inning. Serena Shine notched the first RBI of the inning and then Alexis Jimenez would log the next 2 RBIs on a triple to right field. In the fourth inning, Serena Shine brought in another on an RBI groundout and Alexis Jimenez put the cherry on top with a 3-run homer.

Alexis Ayersman took care of the ball on the mound and was perfect in this one. Ayersman went 5 shutout innings in a run rule victory for the Spirit.

OUAZ took the second game home by a score of 10-6.

The offense added a run in the first on an RBI single from Savannah Sutton. The Spirit would then add 3 more runs in the second inning on an Isabella Rodriguez bases clearing double. In the third inning, Mia Casadei would score on a passed ball, leaving the score at 5-4 in favor of OUAZ. The Spirit broke away in the fourth inning with 4 runs. Serena Shine, Savannah Sutton, and Alexis Jimenez all recorded RBIs in the inning. Alyssa Ramsey would bring in a run in the fifth on an RBI single as well.

OUAZ pitching was good enough to take home a win in game two. Stephanie Cortazar got the start and went 3 innings allowing 5 earned runs. Alexis Ayersman came on to finish the game going 4 innings only allowing 1 run to score, working around traffic on the bases.

OUAZ matches up next with Mount Mercy in a double header on March 18th. The games will take place at Willow Canyon High School, first pitch of game one will be at 4PM MST.
