Spirit Split Doubleheader to Start Conference Play

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ baseball splits their doubleheader today with Benedictine Mesa. The Spirit now sit at a record of 17-9 on the year as they look to right the ship after recent struggles.

The first game ended in a loss for the Spirit by a score of 6-5.

Gabe DeJesus got the scoring going for OUAZ with an RBI single in the second inning. DeJesus would bring in another run later in the sixth inning on an error by the Benedictine defense. In the seventh inning, first baseman Joey Winters smacked an RBI double, scoring Logan Meyer. The Spirit tried to mount a comeback in the ninth with 2 runs coming on a Joel Esparza RBI groundout and an Owen Prendergast RBI double but ultimately fell short. The OUAZ offense put up a good fight in this one, throwing up 10 hits and 8 walks.

Austin Humphres got the ball to start and showed out. Humphres went 7 innings only allowing 2 earned runs to earn himself a quality start. Some shaky bullpen work following Humphres left the Spirit in a hole but Eddie Torres locked things down in the ninth to give OUAZ a chance.

Game two amounted to a big win for OUAZ by a score of 7-6, yet another tight ballgame ending in walkoff fashion.

The Spirit fell behind early but started to climb back in the second inning on a Dante Leach 2 RBI double. Joey Winters would bring in another in the third on a sacrifice fly. OUAZ would add 3 in the third inning. Matthew Carter brought in a run on a hit by pitch to get things going. Nicholas Lustig then followed suit with a 2 RBI single. The score held until the bottom of the seventh when Dane Fraser walked with the bases loaded to win it for OUAZ. The Spirit offense put together a nice performance with 7 hits and 5 walks, taking what they were given.

The pitching did enough to earn the win for OUAZ. Zach Hangas got the start and didn't have his best day going 1.1 innings and allowing 4 earned runs. OUAZ's defense faltered a bit to start as well. Sam Lachot came in going 1 inning and allowing 1 earned run. Gavin Burns would finish things off with a clutch, much needed performance for OUAZ with 4.2 innings of 1 (unearned) run ball, earning a win for himself and the team.

The Spirit will look towards their next double header against Benedictine Mesa tomorrow. First pitch of game one will be at 4PM MST at Royals Field 6.
