OUAZ Sweeps Doubleheader Against Baker

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ Baseball continued their hot start to the season by sweeping the doubleheader against Baker, with final scores of 7-6 and 15-5. The two victories put the Spirit at 9-1 on the season, give them the series win over Baker, and set them up to go for the sweep tomorrow.

In game one the Spirit held on to their lead in the 9th to earn a 7-6 win in the nail-biter. The Spirit handed the ball to Hayden Schooler to tee things off this afternoon. Schooler would throw a quality 5.2 innings only allowing 3 earned runs while striking out 6. The bullpen was a bit shaky for the Spirit in the later innings but with an important shutdown inning from Ryan Bell and Bo Garza locking things down in the ninth to earn a save, OUAZ was able to hold onto their lead.

The offense got started for the Spirit when third baseman Owen Prendergast reached on an error that scored designated hitter Ethan Hatch in the second inning. Later that same inning, Dane Fraser laced an RBI double down the left field line that would score Joel Esparza. Baker tallied two runs of their own in the third but OUAZ was quick to respond with a 4-spot to grab the lead right back. Logan Meyer got things started with his first homerun of the year hitting a moonshot over the left field fence. Dane Fraser would then single down the left field line once again, scoring Joel Esparza. The Spirit would nab another run on a Baker error that saw Owen Prendergast come in from third. Second baseman Luke Hyzdu would cap off the scoring in the third with an RBI single to bring in the red hot Dane Fraser. OUAZ added another run in the fifth inning on an RBI single from shortstop Dante Leach which would be the winning run for the Spirit.

In the second game of today's doubleheader, OUAZ came out swinging taking home their ninth win of the year by a score of 15-5. The Spirit's offense went OFF scoring NINE runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead over Baker. First baseman Joey Winters started the scoring off with an RBI double. This was followed by a Logan Meyer RBI single, a Nano Perez RBI, a Christian Powell sacrifice fly, a Nick Lustig 2 RBI double, and then another Joey Winters RBI double to cap things off. Greg Bozinovich launched his first homerun of the year later in the game and there were more RBI knocks courtesy of Joey Winters, Logan Meyer, Kaden Boyle, and Gabe DeJesus.

Zach Hangas started the game on the mound for OUAZ making his first start of the year. Hangas went 4 innings only allowing 2 earned runs and earning his first win of the season. Brayden Marcum tossed a scoreless inning of his own to contribute to another good outing from OUAZ pitching.

The Spirit will look to continue their good start tomorrow in the series finale against Baker University tomorrow (2/8/25) at 11AM (MST) on Royals field 6
