Spirit Continue Strong Start With Win Against Baker

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ comes out on top against Baker University in this one. By a final score of 6-3 the Spirit played well on all sides of the ball especially exceeding on the pitching side. The Spirit's record now sits at 7-1 as they continue to play great baseball.

OUAZ got the scoring started quickly putting up a 3-spot in the first inning to jump ahead. Dante Leach reached base and ended up scoring on an error made by Baker's starting pitcher. This was followed by an Ethan Hatch RBI double and a Christian Powell walk to drive in the third run of the frame. The score held at 3-0 until the fourth inning when Baker inched closer on a 2 RBI double. OUAZ then responded with an RBI double of their own in the sixth inning courtesy of starting catcher Joel Esparza who continues to shine on both sides of the ball. Baker got a run back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly but was held after that for the rest of the game by Spirit pitching. OUAZ tacked on a couple insurance runs in the seventh to cement their lead. Nano Perez pulled an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score pinch runner Zeke Esparza and then a Joel Esparza safety squeeze capped off the offensive side of OUAZ's seventh inning. All in all as a team OUAZ notched 9 hits and 6 walks while stealing 2 bases both swiped by shortstop Dante Leach. The Spirit's offense continues to be relentless in another great effort.

On the mound OUAZ had yet another good day at the office. Starting pitcher Austin Humphres gutted through 5 quality innings and earned his third win of the season while remaining undefeated. Humphries only allowed 2 earned runs while walking 4 and striking out 6. The bullpen took over in the sixth inning and only allowed 1 earned run in four innings of work. Brandon Enders threw 1.2 important shutout innings to hold the score where it was and allow OUAZ's offense to add on. Nate Naccarato locked things down in the ninth inning, striking out the side and earning his second save of the year.

The Spirit will look to use this momentum heading into their doubleheader tomorrow with Baker University. First game taking place on Royals field 6 at 11AM (MST), second game at 3PM (MST)
