Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ Softball split the doubleheader against Carroll College (1-3), with a game one loss of 7-1 and a game two victory of 9-0. The split gives the Spirit a 2-0 record to start the year.
In game one's 7-1 loss, the Spirit's offense was stymied only scoring one run on five hits. Dayzee Wong knocked in the lone Spirit run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pinch-hit single. Elysa Moreno and Mia Casadei both had the other four hits, each with two knocks. On the pitching side, freshman Stephanie Cortazar started the game and pitched 3-innings while allowing six earned runs. Leila Elias came in relief and pitched 4-innings of one-run ball.
The Spirit bounced back in game two with a convincing 9-0 behind 5-innings of shutout ball from Alexis Ayersman. Offensively, the Spirit performed well scoring nine runs on nine hits. Wong, Savannah Sutton, Isabella Rodriguez (2), Alyssa Ramsey (2), and Ashley Higdon all had RBIs in the victory.
The Spirit will not play another game that counts until Thursday, February 13th, when they host Westcliff for a doubleheader at Willow Canyon, with game one starting at 4PM (MST). They will then finish the week on Friday, February 14th, when they face La Sierra (Time and Location could possibly change).
