OUAZ Sweeps Doubleheader With Two Tight Games Against Westcliff

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ Softball sweeps doubleheader with two thrilling wins against Westcliff, with a game one 4-3 walkoff win in extras, and a 7-6 win in game two. The two victories puts the Spirit at 6-2 to start the season.

In game 1, the Spirit won a 9-inning, extra inning thriller against Westcliff 4-3 to start the doubleheader. Left fielder Serena Shine got the scoring started for the Spirit in the third inning on a single into left field that would score Nayeli Inzunza. The Spirit would go down 3-1 as Westcliff added one run in the fourth inning and two runs in the sixth inning. OUAZ battled back in the seventh to tie things up at 3-3. Another Serena Shine RBI knock tallied the first run of the seventh, this was followed by an RBI single by first baseman Savannah Sutton, scoring Serena Shine. OUAZ notched the winning run in the ninth on a Mia Casadei fielder's choice that scored Nayeli Inzunza for a Spirit winner.

OUAZ pitching was nothing to scoff at in such a tight knit game. Starting pitcher Alexis Ayersman continues her great season with a quality start. Ayersman went 7 innings only allowing 3 earned runs, walking 5 and striking out 4. Stephanie Cortazar followed Ayersman and went two scoreless innings to allow the OUAZ offense to win it in the last half inning.

The second game of today's doubleheader ended in yet another Spirit win. This time by a score of 7-6, another gritty win for a well performing OUAZ squad.

First baseman Savannah Sutton got things started in the first inning with a 2 RBI double that scored Alyssa Ramsey and Serena Shine. OUAZ added another 3 runs in the second inning where Mia Casadei roped an RBI single and Savannah Sutton launched a 2-run homerun to right center. Serena Shine would add another run for the Spirit in the third inning on an RBI groundout. Westcliff came back in the fourth with 3 runs of their own but OUAZ got one back right away on a sacrifice fly by Alexis Jimenez. Westcliff logged another 3 runs in the sixth but was held after that for a Spirit win.

Leila Elias went 2.2 shutout innings to start things off on the right note for OUAZ. Stephanie Cortazar then followed and was met with some trouble via errors and the Westcliff offense. Alexis Ayersman came in for the final 1.2 innings to close things out for OUAZ.

The Spirit now sit at a record of 6-2 as they look towards their next games against La Sierra on February 14th (doubleheader). The first game will start at 11:00AM (MST), the second game will follow at 1:00PM (MST) both at Willow Canyon High School softball field.
