Sprit Sweep Doubleheader With Two Walk-Off Wins

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ softball sweeps yet another doubleheader, this time against La Sierra with another pair of one run victories. The first game coming by a score of 9-8 on another walk-off win. The second game in the form of a 19-18 slugfest walk-off win for the Spirit.

In game one, La Sierra jumped out to an early lead in the first inning on a two run homerun. OUAZ immediately responded and chipped away with a run of their own on an Alexis Jimenez RBI single to center field. OUAZ then jumped on La Sierra in the third inning, putting up 5 runs to leave the score at 6-2. Once again, Alexis Jimenez got things started with a 2 RBI double. Catcher Karlene Chavarria recorded an RBI walk and then Alana Gutierrez knocked in another on a sacrifice fly and then OUAZ stole a run on a double steal. La Sierra notched runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh but OUAZ tallied three runs in the last half inning to steal a win. Isabella Rodriguez laced an RBI single to score the first run of the bottom of the seventh to put the Spirit within one. Shortly after, Karlene Chavarria continued her great day at the plate with a walk-off 2 RBI double. Leila Elias, Alexis Ayersman, and Stephanie Cortazar all logged innings on the mound with Cortazar coming in at the end and earning her second win of the season.

The second game ended in another walk-off win but came in a very different manner. The Spirit offense put up 19 runs to secure their eighth win of the season in another close and exciting game. La Sierra's offense put up a 6 spot in the first inning on OUAZ pitching but the Spirit battled back with 5 runs of their own. Savannah Sutton had a 2 RBI knock along with a Alexis Jimenez RBI double and a Mia Casadei 2 RBI double. OUAZ tallied another two runs in the second inning which saw Savannah Sutton launch yet another 2-run homerun. Mia Casadei hit a homerun of her own in the following inning to get things started for the Spirit in the third. The third inning would also feature an RBI hit from Isabella Rodriguez. Alana Gutierrez had an RBI single in the fourth inning to score another run for OUAZ. The Spirit solidified their victory in the bottom of the eighth inning. Serena Shine singled and scored two runs to tie things up at 18-18 and the winning run was driven in by a Savannah Sutton RBI fielder's choice. Alexis Ayersman earned her third win of the season on the mound, remaining undefeated.

OUAZ now sits at 8-2 on the season and they have walked off 3 out of their last 4 games. The Spirit will look to use their momentum heading forward into their next two game set against Nelson University (AZ). Game 1 will take place on February 22nd, 12:00PM (MST) at Willow Canyon High School softball field.
