Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ Softball sweeps the doubleheader against Nelson Arizona (3-11), with a game one win of 10-2 and a game two victory of 7-1. The wins give the Spirit a 10-2 record to start the year.
In game one's 10-2 victory, the Spirit's offense was firing on all cylinders scoring 10 runs on 14 hits, while only leaving five runners on base. The Spirit's offense was driven by Savannah Sutton and Alexis Jimenez, who combined to drive in eight of the 10 runs scored. Sutton was the player of the game as she went 3/3, with three runs scored, and five RBIs. Jimenez also had a great day at the plate where she was 4/4 at the plate, scoring once, and driving in 3 RBIs herself. OUAZ also got a great performance in the circle from freshman Stephanie Cortazar, who pitched six innings, allowing two runs, while striking out four to earn her third win of the season.
The Spirit would take game two as well behind another dominant start by Junior Alexis Ayersman. Ayersman boosted her record to 4-0 on the season after tossing 7 innings of one-run ball. Offensively, the Spirit got contributions from Serena Shine with a line of 2/3 and an RBI, and Alexis Jimenez who was 2/4 on the day with a run scored. Strong pitching and offense gave the Spirit what they needed to come out with the 7-1 game two victory.
The Spirit will head on the road, where they will play Grace (Calif.) on Friday, February 28th for a Doubleheader with game times at 10AM and NOON (MST). They will then finish the week at Orange County Great Park, when they take on Westcliff on Saturday, March 1st at 11 AM and 1PM (MST). Â
