Spirit Sweep Doubleheader With Big Wins Against Saint Francis and #3 Georgia Gwinnett

Lawrenceville, Ga.- The Spirit picked up two huge wins in the doubleheader with a 9-4 game one victory against Saint Francis (IND), and 12-9 victory over #3 ranked Georgia Gwinnett. The two victories put OUAZ at 15-1 to start the season, which marks their best start in program history.

In game one, the offense put up a solid effort today in a 9-4 win for the Spirit. Nicholas Lustig got the scoring started for OUAZ with an RBI walk in the second inning that scored Kaden Boyle. Starting catcher Joel Esparza would knock in another two runs aided by some mistakes in the field by St. Francis on a throwing error after his single. Nicholas Lustig, Dante Leach and Joey Winters would both record RBI walks in the fifth inning to add to the scoring for the Spirit. Logan Meyer had a dagger of a single after all the free runs given up by St. Francis, scoring two to put the game out of reach. Nicholas Lustig would knock in another run in the sixth on an RBI single to cap off his perfect day at the plate. As a unit, OUAZ recorded 9 hits and 10 walks, showing off their aggressive approach and pairing it with discipline to take what they were given. Nicholas Lustig had a perfect day at the plate going 3-3 with two walks. Joel Esparza also had a multi-hit game.

The pitching for OUAZ put together a solid outing all around. Zach Hangas was given the nod to start things off for the Spirit and went 3 innings giving up 3 earned runs. Eddie Torres was the first out of the bullpen and had a day for himself. Torres went 3 shutout innings, striking out 4 and walking 0. Brandon Enders came on to finish the game and threw a clean inning of his own. As a staff, the Spirit sat down ten St. Francis hitters via the strikeout and only walked three.

The Spirit continued their good work in the second game of the double header picking up their biggest win of the season to date against #3 Georgia Gwinnett. OUAZ got it done by a score of 12-9.

The offense had a day against a very solid pitching staff for Georgia Gwinnett. The team tallied 11 hits and 10 walks combined. Dante Leach, Joey Winters, Nano Perez and Matthew Carter all had multi hit performances in a stellar outing for the Spirit offense. Joey Winters launched another homerun to get the scoring started early and the Spirit kept it rolling after that.

OUAZ pitching was effective enough to scrape out a win. Starting pitcher Austin Humphres went 5 innings only allowing 3 earned runs and giving OUAZ lots of bullpen flexibility towards the end of the game. After some shaky bullpen work, Bo Garza came on to close things out and earn his second save of the season. The game ended on a Wild call which saw shortstop Dante Leach attempt a game-ending double play and as he went to throw to first there was interference. This led to the batter also being called out and the game being over.

OUAZ will look to continue their great play in Georgia tomorrow with another two game day against Saint Francis (Ind.) and Georgia Gwinnett. The first game will start at 9AM MST against Saint Francis, before they play #3 Georgia Gwinnett at 3PM (MST) to close out their road trip at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.
