Spirit Fall in Both Games in Final Day of Georgia Trip

Lawrenceville, Ga.- The Spirit had a tough day two in their Georgia trip as they suffered losses in both games, with a 10-5 loss to Saint Francis (IND), and a 9-0 loss to #3 Georgia Gwinnett. The two losses today knock the Spirit down to 15-3 on the season, snapping their 10-game winning streak, and giving their first back-to-back losses of the season.

In game one, the OUAZ offense struggled, only putting up 5 hits and 8 walks as a squad but still mustering 5 runs. Matthew Carter had a 2 hit game leading the team and an RBI double late in the game to cap off his day.

On the pitching side of things, Hayden Schooler started the game and he went 3 innings only allowing 2 earned runs. The bullpen stalled a bit and Saint Francis (Ind.) was able to take advantage and pull out a win.

In game two, the Spirit suffered a tough loss to Georgia Gwinnett, as the 9-0 loss also marked the first time the Spirit have been shutout all season. The offense was quiet in this one again. Georgia Gwinnett held the Spirit to 3 hits and 4 walks as a team even though they only struck out twice. The pitching for OUAZ was roughed up a bit too. Starter Micah Del Rio went 3 innings giving up 4 earned runs. The bullpen wouldn't follow that up with its best performance either, allowing five more runs to the Grizzlies before night was finished.

The Spirit finish the trip going 2-2, and will look to get back in the win column at home against Briar Cliff on Monday, March 3rd. The game will take place at 6PM MST on Royals Field 6 in Surprise, AZ. It will be a busy week for the Spirit as they will play 6 games total to finish out their non-conference slate. Including the March 3rd matchup against Briar Cliff, the Spirit will also play Morningside on March 4th before playing a four-game set against Jamestown on the 7th and 8th. The Jamestown series will start with two games in Tuscon, before returning to Surprise on Saturday to finish the series.
