Spirit Get Win Number 11 in Victory Over Nelson (AZ)

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ continues to dominate the competition in the early going of their season, taking this one against Nelson University (AZ) by a score of 10-4. The Spirit improved their record to an excellent 11-1. OUAZ also continues to build on what is now a 6 game win streak.

Shortstop Dante Leach ignited the scoring for OUAZ in the first inning with an RBI groundout that scored Nicholas Lustig. The scoring then continued for the Spirit in the third inning. Nicholas Lustig and Joey Winters both logged RBI knocks to score 2. OUAZ would then be gift wrapped four runs in the fashion of wild pitches by Nelson University. This left the score at 7-0 until Nelson University came back with 4 runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning. OUAZ tacked on one run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to leave the score where it would stand at 10-4. Nicholas Lustig laced an RBI single in the fifth inning to score Matthew Carter. Pinch hitter Dane Fraser would score on a wild pitch in the sixth, and in the seventh, a Joey Winters double would score Dante Leach for the final Spirit run. As a team, OUAZ had 12 hits and 8 walks giving themselves plenty of chances to score. Nicholas Lustig, Dante Leach, Joey Winters, and Matthew Carter all had multiple hits tonight.

OUAZ pitching tallied another impressive outing as a unit continuing their great work so far this season. Austin Humphres got things started on the mound and gutted through 4.1 innings only allowing 3 earned runs with 6 strikeouts. Gavin Burns came on in relief and tossed two shutout innings while earning his first win of the season. Bo Garza and Eddie Torres also threw shutout innings of their own in succession to Burns.

OUAZ will face Nelson University (AZ) once again tomorrow in the second game of a three game set. The Spirit will look to use their momentum and keep up their good work on both sides of the ball at 6:00PM (MST), Royals field 6.
